Medicaid Renewals Are Now Being Processed

During the Public Health Emergency that was put into effect on March 1, 2020, federal law prevented states from terminating anyone’s Medicaid coverage. On April 1, 2023, AHCCCS (the Medicaid program in Arizona) began processing renewal applications, with the goal of reaching a determination for the entire AHCCCS population by March 31, 2024. This includes those who are receiving benefits through ALTCS (the Arizona Long Term Care System) to pay for long term care, as well as those who only receive AHCCCS health insurance coverage.

AHCCCS staff is reviewing all customers’ eligibility, and will issue automatic renewals when possible. When they are unable to automatically renew a customer’s eligibility, they will give a customer 30 days to respond to requests for information.

If the information is not satisfactory, or if AHCCCS says they did not receive it, they will give a customer a minimum of 10 days’ notice, which will include the customer’s appeal rights, before taking any adverse action.

If a customer is able to provide the information AHCCCS says was missing during their renewal month, or in the month following that month, benefits will continue without any gap in coverage.

If the customer provides the information within 31-60 days of the renewal month, then benefits will continue, but with a 30-day gap in coverage. However, no reapplication will be required.

If the customer provides the information within 61-90 days if the renewal month, benefits will continue, but with a 60 day gap in coverage.

If the customer is unable to provide the information within 90 days after the renewal month, then a new application for benefits will be required.
